What is Basreng? The Viral Snack, Explained
If your feed is full of a crunchy, chilli-red snack everyone calls "basreng", here's what it actually is — and why it's so hard to stop eating.
So, what is basreng?
Basreng is short for bakso goreng — fried fish-and-tapioca slices from Indonesia, sliced thin and seasoned heavily with chilli and savoury spice. Think of it as a crunchier, spicier cousin of a fish cracker.
Why it went viral
The mix of extreme crunch and bold, spicy-savoury seasoning made basreng a TikTok sensation across Indonesia and Malaysia. It's moreish in the dangerous way — one handful becomes the whole packet.
What does it taste like?
Crispy and umami, usually quite spicy, often with a fragrant daun jeruk (kaffir lime) note. Heat levels vary by brand and flavour, from mild-savoury to serious chilli.
How to eat it
Straight from the pack as a snack, scattered over rice or noodles for crunch, or alongside kerupuk at a gathering. It travels well, so it's a solid pantry and office-desk snack too.
