How to Wrap Dumplings & Wantan at Home — Step by Step
Homemade dumplings feel fancy, but the skill is mostly in the fold — and it takes about ten minutes to learn. Start with good fresh skins, a simple filling, and you are halfway there.
Start with fresh skins
Good skins make wrapping easy — thin enough to pleat, strong enough not to tear. Fresh Dumpling & Wantan Skins are Malaysian-made and come in round (dumpling/gyoza) and square (wantan) shapes.
A simple filling
Mince chicken or prawn, a little shredded cabbage, chopped spring onion, garlic, a splash of soy sauce and sesame oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix in one direction until sticky.
Two easy folds
- Dumpling (round skin): spoon filling in the centre, wet the edge with water, fold into a half-moon and pinch 3–4 small pleats on one side.
- Wantan (square skin): filling in the centre, wet two edges, fold into a triangle, then bring the two bottom corners together and press.
Three ways to cook & where to buy
Boil for soup wantan (3–4 minutes, they float when done), steam for soft dumplings, or pan-fry for crispy-bottomed potstickers. Halal — order Dumpling & Wantan Skins from OmniCart.
